Kilmory Castle (Lochgilphead)

This is a bit of a different one! While it is a grand and beautiful 19th-century building, it is actually the headquarters for the local council. Because of this, the castle building itself is not open to the public. However, it is still very much worth a visit for the incredible Kilmory Woodland Park that surrounds it. You’ll find it just south of Lochgilphead, Argyll, with the postcode PA31 8RT.

What to Expect and Enjoy
Even though you can’t go inside the house, the estate is a hidden gem for walkers and nature fans.

  • The Gardens: The grounds were originally laid out by a famous botanist from Kew Gardens, so you’ll see rare trees and exotic shrubs that you won’t find in your average park. The rhododendrons here are spectacular when they bloom.
  • Woodland Walks: There is a network of well-maintained paths. One of the best leads you down to a loch-side picnic area where it’s incredibly peaceful.
  • The Bird Hide: If you like wildlife, there is a quiet hide where you can sit and watch the birds on the loch.
  • Historical Markers: As you walk, you’ll stumble across archaeological sites and old family tombs tucked away in the woods, which adds a bit of mystery to the stroll.

Best For and Time Spent
This is best for walkers, dog owners, and families looking for a quiet, free place to explore. It’s a great spot to stretch your legs if you are touring the Argyll coast.

  • Duration: Most people spend about 1 to 2 hours here enjoying a circular walk.

Helpful Tips for Your Visit

  • Parking: There is free parking available in the park area.
  • Food & Drink: There isn’t a café on-site since it’s a council hub, but you are only a two-minute drive from the town of Lochgilphead, which has plenty of local bakeries, shops, and cafes.
  • Savings: It is completely free to explore the grounds and woodland park.
  • Season: The park is open all year round and is a great spot to see the changing seasons.

Nearby and Combine-able Hits
Since you are in the area, you could combine this with a visit to Crinan, a beautiful village at the end of the Crinan Canal, or head south to Kilmory Knap Chapel, which houses some incredible medieval carved grave slabs.
