Oban Distillery

This is one of the most unusual distilleries in Scotland because the town of Oban actually grew up around the distillery. It sits right in the middle of the high street at Stafford Street, Oban, with the postcode PA34 5NH.

What to Expect and Enjoy
Because it’s in the town centre, it’s a very easy “add-on” to a day spent at the seaside.

  • The Tiny Footprint: It is one of the smallest distilleries in the country. Because it’s hemmed in by the town and the steep cliffs behind it, they’ve never been able to expand, so it still feels very intimate and traditional.
  • The Craft: You get to see the “old-school” way of making whisky, including the wooden worm tubs (huge barrels of water) used to cool the spirit.
  • The Smells: Walking past on the street, you’ll often get a beautiful waft of warm, malty cereal and sea salt.

Best For and Time Spent
Best for day-trippers and tourists who are already visiting Oban for the shops or the ferries.

  • Duration: A tour is quite quick, usually around 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Helpful Tips for Your Visit

  • Parking: There is no parking at the distillery itself. You’ll need to use the public pay-and-display car parks in Oban town centre, which can be busy in the summer.
  • Nearby Treats: Right outside the distillery gates is the Oban Seafood Hut (The Green Shack), which is famous for fresh oysters and lobster.
  • Season: Open all year round.
