Blair Drummond Safari Park
Located just outside Stirling, this is a massive 120-acre park where you can get a taste of the wild without leaving your car. It’s located at Blair Drummond, Stirling, and the postcode is FK9 4UR. It is famous for being one of the few places in Scotland where you can see lions, rhinos, and giraffes all in one afternoon.
What to Expect and Enjoy
The park is split into several different “zones,” and you can explore them at your own pace.
- The Drive-Through Safaris: This is the main event. You drive your own car through large enclosures where animals roam free. You’ll pass through sections for rhinos, camels, and the famous Lion Reserve. Just a heads-up: keep your windows rolled up! There is also a macaque (monkey) section, but they provide a bypass route if you’re worried about your car’s windscreen wipers.
- Chimp Island: After the drive-through, you park up and explore the rest on foot. You can take a short boat trip out to an island where a family of chimpanzees lives. It’s a very peaceful way to see them in a natural setting.
- Sea Lion Show: This is a huge crowd-pleaser. The sea lions are incredibly smart and perform in a large covered auditorium. The trainers are very chatty and explain how they care for the animals.
- Bird of Prey Displays: They have spectacular flying demonstrations where eagles and hawks soar right over the audience’s heads.
- Massive Adventure Play: This is arguably one of the best play areas in the country. It features a giant pirate ship, a massive fort, and a “flying fox” zip line. There is also a huge indoor hay-barn for climbing if it starts to rain.
- Dinosaur Safari: A woodland walk filled with life-sized, moving, and roaring dinosaurs. It’s a massive hit with younger children.
Best For and Time Spent
This is the ultimate day out for families with children of all ages. From toddlers in the soft play to teens enjoying the “roaring” dinosaurs, everyone finds something to love.
- Duration: You should definitely plan for a full day here (at least 5 to 6 hours). There is simply too much to see to rush it.
Height and Age Guidance
Most of the park is accessible to everyone.
- Adventure Play: Some of the larger slides and zip lines have age or height recommendations, but there are smaller versions right next to them for toddlers.
- Petting Farm: Great for very young children to meet goats and guinea pigs safely.
Helpful Tips for Your Visit
- Parking: There is a huge amount of free parking on-site once you have passed the ticket booths.
- Food & Drink: There is a large food court serving burgers, fish and chips, and sandwiches. However, Blair Drummond is famous for its BBQ and Picnic areas. They actually provide large charcoal BBQ pits that visitors can use for free (you just bring your own food and charcoal). It’s a brilliant way to save money and makes for a great atmosphere.
- Savings: Booking online in advance is essential as they use a timed entry system. They offer Blue Light discounts and have various seasonal offers.
- Season: The park is usually open daily from late March through to late October. They often have a special “Christmas Safari” or light trail during the winter months.
Nearby and Combine-able Hits
Because it’s a full-day attraction, most people don’t combine it with anything else. However, you are only a 10-minute drive from the Stirling Wallace Monument or the historic Stirling Castle. If you’re heading back towards the motorway, the Briarlands Farm is right next door and offers a smaller, cheaper “farm-style” play experience if the kids still have energy left.
