North Wales is a premier destination for narrow-gauge steam, offering some of the most dramatic and historic railway journeys in the world. Here are the highlights for your itinerary:
The Greats: Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways
These two interconnected lines offer the longest and most spectacular journeys in the region.
Ffestiniog Railway: The world’s oldest narrow-gauge railway. It climbs 700 feet from the harbour at Porthmadog into the mountains of Blaenau Ffestiniog, famous for its iconic “Double Fairlie” engines and spiralling tracks.
Welsh Highland Railway: Starting from beneath the walls of Caernarfon Castle, this line runs 25 miles through the heart of the Snowdonia National Park, passing the foot of Snowdon and navigating the stunning Aberglaslyn Pass.
The Mountain Legend
Snowdon Mountain Railway: Since 1896, this rack-and-pinion railway has been hauling visitors from Llanberis to the summit of Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa). On a clear day, the views from the peak are unparalleled, reaching as far as Ireland.
The Lakeside Journeys
Llanberis Lake Railway: A charming, shorter journey that runs along the shores of Llyn Padarn. It offers fantastic views of the Snowdon massif and passes the historic Dinorwig slate quarry.
Bala Lake Railway: Located in the southern reaches of the National Park, this line provides a peaceful four-mile trip along the scenic shoreline of Llyn Tegid, the largest natural lake in Wales.
Hidden Gems & Valley Lines
Llangollen Railway: A standard-gauge heritage line that follows the River Dee. It is renowned for its beautifully restored stations and the quintessential experience of steam through the rolling hills of the Dee Valley.
Talyllyn Railway: Based in Tywyn, this was the first preserved railway in the world. It served as the inspiration for the “Skarloey Railway” in the Thomas the Tank Engine stories and winds through the beautiful Fathew Valley.
Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway: A quirky, narrow-gauge line that tackles steep gradients and tight curves as it travels through the mid-Wales borderlands, often featuring unique vintage carriages from across Europe.
