What to Expect and Enjoy
The gardens span 70 acres and are packed with exotic plants, towering trees, and hidden pathways. It’s a place where you can travel the world’s climates just by walking through different sections.

  • The Rock Garden: A huge, stunning area with a stream and tiny, colourful plants from mountain ranges across the globe. It is a masterpiece of garden design.
  • Chinese Hillside: One of the largest collections of Chinese plants outside of China. It features a traditional pavilion and winding paths with great views back toward the city skyline.
  • Victorian Glasshouses: These are spectacular structures, including the famous Palm House. Inside, you can experience tropical heat and see giant lily pads. Note: Some glasshouses may undergo restoration work, so check the signs when you arrive to see which areas are open.
  • Wildlife: The gardens are home to very friendly grey squirrels and a variety of birds. It’s a very peaceful place for a slow stroll.

Best For and Time Spent
This is a perfect destination for everyone—families with toddlers, couples on a romantic walk, or seniors looking for a peaceful afternoon.

  • Duration: You can easily spend 2 to 4 hours here. If you are a real plant lover, you could stay all day.

Helpful Tips for Your Visit

  • Free Entry: One of the best things about the Botanics is that entry to the main gardens is completely free, though there is usually a small charge if you want to go inside the Glasshouses.
  • Parking: There is metered on-street parking nearby, particularly around the West Gate on Arboretum Place. However, it is very well-served by local buses (numbers 8, 23, and 27) which stop right outside the East Gate.
  • Food & Drink: There are several options, from the upscale “Gateway Restaurant” at the West Gate to the more relaxed “Terrace Café” in the middle of the gardens, which has great outdoor seating for sunny days.
  • Restrictions: To keep the plants safe, they don’t allow ball games, cycling, or pets (except assistance dogs) inside.
