Edinburgh International Climbing Arena (EICA)

Commonly known as “Ratho,” this is one of the largest indoor climbing centres in the world. It is built into an old stone quarry, giving it an incredible atmosphere. It is located in Ratho, with the postcode EH28 8AA.

What to Expect and Enjoy
The scale of this place is jaw-dropping. The climbing walls are massive, and the roof is made of glass, so it feels like you are outdoors even when it’s raining.

  • The Main Arena: You’ll see people tackling huge stone walls that tower above you. Even if you aren’t climbing, it’s amazing to watch the experts from the balconies.
  • Clip ‘n Climb: This is the big highlight for families and beginners. It is a series of colourful, wacky climbing challenges (like giant beanstalks or Tetris blocks) where you are automatically lowered back down by a safety wire.
  • Scrambles: For younger kids, there is a large soft play area with a café right next to it, so parents can relax while the little ones burn off energy.
  • The Gym and Spa: It’s a full leisure centre, so there are fitness suites and even a sauna to help soothe sore muscles after a climb.

Best For and Time Spent
Perfect for teens, active families, and adults. It is a brilliant rainy day option because it is so vast.

  • Duration: Most people spend about 2 to 3 hours here, especially if doing a session in Clip ‘n Climb.
