Hopetoun House

Often described as “Scotland’s Finest Stately Home,” this massive house and estate sit right on the banks of the River Forth. It is located near South Queensferry, West Lothian, postcode EH30 9RW.

This is a place of incredible scale and luxury. It has been the home of the Hope family for over 300 years.

The Grand Interiors: Walking through the house, you’ll see spectacular carvings, huge paintings, and gold-leaf ceilings. It feels very “Downton Abbey”—in fact, it’s often used as a filming location for shows like Outlander.
The Rooftop Viewing Platform: If you can manage the stairs, head to the roof for a bird’s-eye view of the three Forth Bridges.
The Grounds & Trails: There are several waymarked walks around the estate. Keep an eye out for the herd of red deer and the ancient trees.
Spring Blooms: If you visit in the spring, the grounds are famous for their sea of snowdrops and bluebells.

Ideal for adults, couples, and seniors who enjoy history and grand architecture. Families will enjoy the wide-open spaces and the nature trails.

Season: The house is usually open from Easter through to late September. The grounds sometimes host special events in the winter, like light trails or horse trials.
Food & Drink: The “Stables Kitchen” is a high-quality tearoom located in the clever conversion of the old stables. Their afternoon tea is very popular!
Parking: There is plenty of free parking on-site.
Nearby: It’s a very short drive from here into South Queensferry, where you can walk under the famous red Rail Bridge and find plenty of pubs and fish and chip shops.
