The Palace of Holyroodhouse

Situated directly opposite the Parliament, this is the official residence of the British Monarch in Scotland. It sits at the end of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, postcode EH8 8DX.

This is a “working” palace, so it feels very grand and well-kept.

State Apartments: You can walk through the rooms used by the Royal Family for official ceremonies. The ceilings and tapestries are stunning.
Mary, Queen of Scots: You can visit the historic apartments where she lived. It’s quite atmospheric and a bit eerie to see the spot where famous events in her life took place.
The Gardens: The palace grounds are huge and very peaceful, offering a great view of the nearby hills.
Holyrood Abbey: Right next to the palace are the ruins of a 12th-century abbey. It has no roof now, but the high stone arches are incredibly romantic and great for photos.

Ideal for couples, adults, and fans of royal history. While kids are welcome, it’s a “look but don’t touch” kind of place, so very active toddlers might find it a bit restrictive.
