Dirleton Castle and Gardens

Located in the charming village of Dirleton, this site is a mix of a sturdy fortress and a stunning landscaped garden. You can find it in East Lothian, using the postcode EH39 5ER.

This is a great one because it has two very different “personalities.”

  • The Ruins: The castle is unique because it was built over several centuries by three different families. You can explore the dark storage vaults, the massive kitchen, and even the “pit prison.”
  • The Gardens: Surrounding the ruins are award-winning gardens. They hold the record for the world’s longest herbaceous border—it’s a massive wall of flowers that looks incredible in the summer.
  • The Doocot: There is an old beehive-shaped pigeon house (doocot) in the grounds that is remarkably well-preserved. It used to hold over 1,000 birds!

This is a hit with families because kids love exploring the castle nooks and crannies, while garden lovers and seniors will appreciate the immaculate flower beds.

  • Duration: Most visitors spend about 1.5 to 2 hours here.

  • Parking: There is a small car park at the entrance, and plenty of free on-street parking around the village green right outside.
  • Food & Drink: There isn’t a cafe inside the castle, but the village of Dirleton has some lovely local inns and cafes just a two-minute walk away.
  • Savings: As it’s run by Historic Scotland, members get in free. If you are paying, your ticket usually gets you a discount at other nearby ruins like Tantallon.
  • Accessibility: The gardens are level and easy to walk, but the castle has lots of steep, narrow stone stairs.
