Known as the “Edinburgh Malt,” this beautiful distillery is set in the rolling farmland of East Lothian, about 15 miles from the city centre. It is located in Pencaitland, using the postcode EH34 5ET.
What to Expect and Enjoy This is one of the few remaining Lowland distilleries and it has a very different feel to the rugged Highland ones. It’s often called the “Garden Distillery” because of its lush, manicured surroundings.
The Flavour Journey: The main tour is very modern and interactive. You don’t just look at copper stills; you go on a sensory journey through the history of the brand and the science behind the taste.
Model Distillery: Before your tour, you can explore their famous “miniature” distillery—a massive, detailed model that shows exactly how the whole process works.
The Tasting: Most tours end in the beautiful tasting room where you can sample several whiskies. If you are the designated driver, they usually provide “driver’s packs” so you can take your samples home to enjoy later.
The Bar: Even if you don’t do a full tour, the bar area is stunning and serves excellent whisky-based cocktails and platters of local Scottish food.
Best For and Time Spent This is a fantastic stop for adults and couples. While children are often allowed on the tours (usually over 8 years old), they obviously can’t join in the tasting, so it’s much more of an adult-oriented day out.
Duration: Most visitors spend about 1.5 to 2 hours here.
Helpful Tips for Your Visit
Getting There: If you don’t want to drive, the distillery often runs a shuttle bus from Edinburgh city centre (usually from near Waterloo Place). It’s a great way to enjoy the tasting without worrying about the car.
Parking: There is free parking on-site for those who are driving.
Savings: If you have a “Friends of the Classic Malts” membership or a similar whisky pass, you can often get free tours or discounts in the shop.
Quiet Season: Like many distilleries, they occasionally have a “Silent Season” (often in early summer or January) where the actual machinery might be off for maintenance, though the tours and tastings still go ahead.
