Midlothian Snowsports Centre

Known locally as “Hillend,” this is one of the longest artificial ski slopes in Europe. It sits on the side of the stunning Pentland Hills in Fairmilehead, Midlothian, using the postcode EH10 7DU.

What to Expect and Enjoy
You don’t need real snow to enjoy the thrill of the slopes here. The views from the top, looking back over Edinburgh to the sea, are some of the best in the area.

  • Tubing: This is the big hit for families. You sit in a large inflatable ring and slide down dedicated chutes. It is fast, bumpy, and great fun for all ages.
  • Skiing & Snowboarding: Whether you are a pro or a total beginner, there are slopes for every level. They offer “taster sessions” if you’ve never tried it before.
  • The Chairlift: Even if you aren’t skiing, you can take a ride on the chairlift just for the scenery. It’s a very relaxing way to see the hills.

Best For and Time Spent
This is a brilliant spot for teens and active families. It’s also popular for adult groups looking for something different.

  • Duration: If you are just doing tubing, allow about 1 hour. For skiing or lessons, you’ll likely be there for 2 to 3 hours.

Helpful Tips for Your Visit

  • What to Wear: Even if it’s a sunny day, wear long trousers, long sleeves, and gloves. The artificial “matting” on the slopes can be scratchy if you take a tumble!
  • Booking: Tubing and lessons must be booked in advance as they fill up very quickly, especially on weekends.
  • Parking: There is a large free car park on-site.
  • Food: There is a cafe called “Cafe 360” which serves hot chocolate, coffee, and snacks—perfect for warming up after a session on the hill.
