Camera Obscura & World of Illusions

Right at the top of the Royal Mile, this is Edinburgh’s oldest visitor attraction and is packed with over 100 interactive exhibits. It is in Edinburgh, postcode EH1 2ND.

What to Expect and Enjoy
This is five floors of total brain-bending fun. Nothing is quite what it seems here!

  • The Vortex Tunnel: A walk-through tunnel that makes you feel like the floor is spinning, even though it’s perfectly flat. It’s a very strange sensation!
  • Mirror Maze: A classic but very well-done maze where it’s surprisingly easy to get lost in your own reflection.
  • Magic Gallery: You can play with plasma balls, shadows that stay on the wall after you move, and optical illusions that make your friends look tiny or giant.
  • The Camera Obscura Show: At the very top, you enter a dark room where a Victorian “periscope” projects a live, moving image of the city onto a giant table. The guide “picks up” tiny people on the street with a piece of paper!
  • The Rooftop: The view from the very top is one of the best in the city—you are literally looking down on the castle and the Royal Mile.

Best For and Time Spent
Perfect for teens, families, and groups of friends. It’s very “Instagrammable” and great for a laugh.

  • Duration: Most visitors spend about 2 hours exploring all five floors.

Helpful Tips for Your Visit

  • Accessibility: Because it is a very old, narrow building, there is no lift. You will have to climb quite a lot of stairs to get to the top, so it isn’t suitable for wheelchairs or buggies.
  • Booking: It gets very busy! Booking a timed entry slot online is essential to avoid long queues.
  • Rainy Days: It’s all indoors, making it a perfect escape from the Scottish weather.
