The Royal Mile

This famous street connects Edinburgh Castle at the top with Holyrood Palace at the bottom. It is essentially the heart of the Old Town, Edinburgh, covering the EH1 postcode area.

What to Expect and Enjoy
The “Mile” is actually a collection of four different streets that flow together. It’s steep, busy, and packed with history.

  • The Closes: Look out for the tiny, narrow alleys (called “closes”) leading off the main street. They are very atmospheric and often lead to hidden courtyards or secret gardens like Dunbar’s Close.
  • St Giles’ Cathedral: About halfway down, you’ll see this massive church with its famous “crown” spire. It’s free to go inside and the stained glass is beautiful.
  • Street Performers: Especially during the summer months, the street is alive with bagpipers, magicians, and fire-eaters. It’s a great place to just stand and soak up the atmosphere.
  • Quirky Museums: Aside from the big ones, you’ll find smaller gems like the Museum of Childhood or the People’s Story, which are great for a quick look.

Best For and Time Spent
Ideal for everyone. It is the best place to get your “Edinburgh bearings.”

  • Duration: To walk from top to bottom without stopping takes about 20 minutes, but most people spend 2 to 3 hours popping in and out of shops and alleys.

Helpful Tips for Your Visit

  • Footwear: Like the Castle, the Royal Mile is mostly made of old, lumpy cobbles. High heels are a bad idea here!
  • The “Heart of Midlothian”: Near St Giles’ Cathedral, look for a heart shape made of stones in the pavement. You might see locals spitting on it—it’s an old tradition for good luck (though maybe just watch from a distance!).
  • Shopping: This is the place for tartan, shortbread, and whisky. It can be a bit touristy, so if you want better prices, try the shops on the side streets.
