North Berwick Harbour

Located in a stunning seaside town about 30 minutes east of the city, the harbour is the focal point of local life. It is in East Lothian, using the postcode EH39 4SS.

What to Expect and Enjoy
This is a classic Scottish harbour—rugged, colourful, and very relaxing.

  • The Boats: It’s a working harbour, so you can watch the fisherman bringing in their catch or see the yachts bobbing in the water.
  • Paddling and Rockpooling: There are small sandy beaches right next to the harbour walls that are perfect for kids to splash about in or look for crabs in the rock pools.
  • The Lobster Shack: Right on the harbour front, you can get fresh seafood cooked to order. It’s famous for its lobster and chips which you eat outside on picnic benches.
  • The Views: You have a perfect view of the Bass Rock and the Fidra island (which was the inspiration for the book Treasure Island).

A top choice for families, couples, and dog walkers. It’s very laid back and has a lovely holiday feel.

  • Duration: You’ll likely spend 1 to 2 hours around the harbour itself, but you can easily make it a full day by visiting the nearby shops and beaches.

Helpful Tips for Your Visit

  • Parking: The harbour car park is very small and fills up early. There is a larger free car park on the edge of the town with a nice walk through the park to get to the sea.
  • Ice Cream: You can’t visit North Berwick without getting an ice cream! There are several famous parlours just a few minutes’ walk from the water.
  • The Birds: Keep an eye on your food! The local seagulls are very bold and have been known to “borrow” chips right out of people’s hands.
