Deep Sea World – North Queensferry

Located right under the shadow of the world-famous Forth Bridge, this is Scotland’s national aquarium. It’s a brilliant way to see what lives beneath the waves without getting your feet wet. You’ll find it at North Queensferry, Fife (Postcode: KY11 1JR).

What to Expect and Enjoy
The star of the show here is the Underwater Tunnel. It’s one of the longest in the world and uses a moving walkway to glide you through a massive tank.

  • Shark Encounter: As you move through the tunnel, huge Sand Tiger sharks, stingrays, and shoals of fish swim right over your head. It’s an incredible feeling to be that close to them.
  • The Seals: There is a large outdoor seal enclosure where you can watch the resident seals playing and lounging. Try to time your visit for a feeding session—the keepers usually give a chat about the seals’ personalities.
  • Amazonia: This section takes you into the rainforest, featuring piranhas and exotic reptiles. It’s a nice change of pace from the saltwater tanks.
  • Rockpools: Great for curious kids, there are “touch pools” where you can get a closer look at starfish and crabs under the guidance of the staff.

Best For and Time Spent
This is a huge hit for families and kids of all ages. It’s also the perfect “rainy day” activity since almost everything is indoors.

  • Duration: Most people spend about 2 hours here. If you stop to watch multiple feeding presentations, you might stay a bit longer.

Helpful Tips for Your Visit

  • Parking: There is a large car park on-site which is free for visitors.
  • Food: There is a café that serves the usual sandwiches, hot dogs, and snacks. It can get quite busy and a bit pricey during school holidays, so some people prefer to eat in the nearby village.
  • Savings: Tickets are almost always cheaper if you buy them online at least a day in advance. They also offer a Blue Light discount and family bundles.

Nearby and Combine-able Hits

  • The Forth Bridges: Since you’re right there, take a walk down to the pier to get some of the best photos of the three bridges.
  • North Queensferry: It’s a very pretty, quiet village. The “world’s smallest working light tower” is located right at the harbour and is worth a quick peek.
