3 Day ‘Best of Fife’ trip

Day 1: Royal History and Hidden Gems

Focus: West Fife and the Ancient Capital

  • Morning: Dunfermline Palace, Abbey, and Pittencrieff Park
Start your trip in the historic heart of Dunfermline (KY12 7PE). Explore the Abbey to see the tomb of Robert the Bruce, then wander through the Palace ruins. Afterwards, walk directly into “The Glen” (Pittencrieff Park) to see the peacocks and the Art Deco pavilion.
  • Lunch: Grab a bite at the Granary Cafe inside the library next to the Abbey, or pick up a picnic to enjoy in the park.
  • Afternoon: Culross Village
Drive about 15 minutes west to Culross (KY12 8JH). Spend your afternoon wandering the cobbled streets and visiting the yellow-walled Palace and its tiered gardens. It’s a very relaxing way to soak up some atmosphere.
  • Evening: The Forth Bridges
Head to North Queensferry (KY11 1LA) for a sunset walk under the massive red girders of the Forth Bridge. There are some lovely local pubs here for a quiet dinner with a view of the water.

Day 2: Coastal Adventure and Wildlife

Focus: The East Neuk and the Islands

  • Morning: Anstruther and the Isle of May
Head to Anstruther Harbour (KY10 3DX) for a boat trip. If it’s between April and July, the Isle of May is a must-see for the puffins. The boat trip takes about 4–5 hours in total.
  • Lunch: It has to be fish and chips! When you get back to dry land, join the queue at the Anstruther Fish Bar or one of the other excellent local chippies.
  • Afternoon: The Fife Coastal Path (Anstruther to Pittenweem)
Walk off your lunch with a gentle 30-minute stroll along the coastal path to the next village, Pittenweem. It’s very level and offers beautiful views of the “lowland” scenery and the sea.
  • Late Afternoon: Kellie Castle
On your way back inland, stop at Kellie Castle (KY10 2RF) for a wander through its organic walled garden. It’s very peaceful and usually less crowded in the late afternoon.

Day 3: St Andrews Classics and Farm Fun

Focus: The Home of Golf and Outdoor Play

  • Morning: St Andrews Aquarium and Castle Ruins
Start at the cliff-top aquarium (KY16 9AS) to see the seals and meerkats. From there, it’s a short walk to the Castle Ruins (KY16 9AR) where you can brave the underground siege tunnels.
  • Lunch: Head to the British Golf Museum Cafe for a view over the Old Course and West Sands Beach.
  • Afternoon: Choice of Activity
    • Option A (Active): Head to Cairnie Fruit Farm (KY15 4QD) to get lost in the Maize Maze and let the kids loose in the Funyard.
    • Option B (Relaxed): Visit Cambo Gardens (KY16 8QD) for a walk through the flowers and down to the quiet beach.
  • Evening: A Walk on West Sands
Finish your journey with a sunset stroll along the famous West Sands Beach. It’s the perfect place to reflect on the trip before heading home.
