West Sands Beach

West Sands is perhaps the most famous beach in Scotland, stretching for nearly two miles along the edge of St Andrews. It is famous globally for the opening sequence of the film Chariots of Fire, where athletes run along the water’s edge. You’ll find it on the western edge of St Andrews, Fife (Postcode: KY16 9DZ).

What to Expect and Enjoy
This is a massive, clean, and sandy beach backed by the world-famous Old Course and a series of impressive sand dunes.

  • Space to Breathe: Because it is so long and wide, it rarely feels crowded, even on the busiest summer days. It is perfect for long walks, flying kites, or letting dogs run off some steam.
  • Water Sports: It’s a popular spot for kite surfing and land yachting (sailing on wheels across the sand). On a windy day, it’s quite a spectacle to watch them zipping along.
  • The Dunes: The dunes are a protected area and are great for a sheltered walk if the wind is coming off the North Sea. There are clearly marked paths to help protect the grasses that hold the dunes together.
  • Safe Paddling: The beach has a very gentle slope, making the water quite shallow for a long way out, which is great for children wanting to paddle.

Best For and Time Spent
This is a winner for families, dog walkers, and anyone who loves a classic coastal view.

  • Duration: You could spend 30 minutes for a quick breath of sea air or easily 3 or 4 hours if you’re setting up for a beach day with a picnic.

Helpful Tips for Your Visit

  • Parking: There is a long road running parallel to the beach with lots of parking spaces. It can get busy, but if you drive further away from the town end, you can usually find a spot.
  • Facilities: There are public toilets and showers located near the main car park at the town end of the beach.
  • Food: There isn’t much directly on the sand, but the Links Clubhouse and the British Golf Museum Cafe are right at the entrance. Bringing your own snacks is a good idea if you plan to walk to the far end.

Nearby and Combine-able Hits

  • St Andrews Old Course: You are right next to the 1st and 18th fairways.
  • The Aquarium: This is located at the very start of the beach walk, so it’s easy to combine a morning with the fish and an afternoon on the sand.
