St Andrews Castle Ruins

Perched on a rocky promontory overlooking the North Sea, these ruins are the remains of the main residence of the bishops and archbishops of St Andrews. It was once the religious centre of Scotland and has witnessed some of the most dramatic events in the country’s history. You’ll find it on the coast at St Andrews, Fife (Postcode: KY16 9AR).

What to Expect and Enjoy
While much of the castle is now in ruins, there are two specific features that make this a “must-visit” rather than just a quick look over the fence.

  • The Siege Mine and Counter-Mine: This is the highlight for most visitors. During a famous siege in 1546, the attackers dug a tunnel (a mine) through the rock to try and bring down the walls, and the defenders dug their own tunnel (a counter-mine) to stop them. You can actually go underground and walk through these narrow, damp stone tunnels today. It’s a bit of a squeeze but a truly unique experience.
  • The Bottle Dungeon: You can peer down into one of the most infamous castle prisons in Britain. It’s a deep, cold pit carved out of the solid rock where many famous prisoners were kept.
  • The Views: Even if you aren’t a history buff, the views from the castle walls across the bay to the West Sands and the Aquarium are spectacular.
  • Visitor Centre: There is a good museum at the entrance with a model showing what the castle looked like in its prime, which helps you make sense of the ruins.

This is a hit with families (kids love the tunnels) and history lovers.

  • Duration: Most people spend about 1 to 1.5 hours here.

Helpful Tips for Your Visit

  • Accessibility: The tunnels are very narrow and have low ceilings, so they aren’t suitable for anyone who is claustrophobic or has mobility issues. However, the rest of the castle grounds are mostly level grass.
  • Savings: It is managed by Historic Scotland. If you have an annual membership, entry is free. They also offer a Blue Light discount.
  • Parking: There is no dedicated car park, so you’ll need to use the town’s “pay and display” street parking or one of the larger car parks a short walk away.
