Fife Coastal Path

This is one of Scotland’s most popular long-distance paths, stretching for roughly 117 miles along the entire coastline of Fife. It links the famous Forth Bridges in the south to the Tay Bridge in the north. While walking the whole thing takes over a week, it is perfectly designed for dipping in and out for short afternoon strolls or full-day hikes.

What to Expect and Enjoy
The path is incredibly varied. You’ll experience everything from rugged cliffs and golden sandy beaches to historic fishing villages and industrial heritage.

  • Wildlife: Keep an eye out for seals, which are common along the whole route. If you are lucky, you might even spot dolphins in the Firth of Forth.
  • The Fishing Villages: Passing through the “East Neuk” (the eastern corner of Fife) is a highlight. Villages like Pittenweem, St Monans, and Crail have tiny harbours and narrow streets that feel like they belong in a storybook.
  • The Chain Walk: Near Elie, there is a famous and adventurous section where you use chains bolted to the cliffs to scramble over the rocks. It’s optional, so don’t worry if you prefer to stay on the high path!

Best For and Time Spent
This is a winner for everyone—families with dogs, serious hikers, and casual strollers.

  • Distance and Surface: The paths vary. Some sections are level, paved promenades (perfect for buggies), while others are narrow, grassy, and can be hilly or muddy.
  • Duration: Most visitors pick a section between two towns (usually 3 to 6 miles) which takes about 2 to 3 hours at a relaxed pace.

Helpful Tips for Your Visit

  • Transport: Because it’s a linear path (start at one point, end at another), many people use the “Fife Flexi” bus tickets. You can park your car at the start, walk to the next village, and hop on a bus back to your car.
  • Tide Times: Some parts of the path go across beaches. Always check the tide before you set off so you don’t get cut off by the rising water.
  • Refreshments: You are never far from a great café or pub in the coastal towns, but it’s always wise to carry water and a snack for the quieter stretches between villages.
