Falkland Palace and Garden

Falkland is often called one of the most beautiful villages in Scotland, and the palace is its centerpiece. This was the country residence of the Stuart monarchs, including Mary Queen of Scots. You’ll find it in the heart of Falkland, Fife (Postcode: KY15 7DA).

What to Expect and Enjoy
The palace is a stunning example of Renaissance architecture and feels very grand yet surprisingly “homely” compared to some bigger castles.

  • The Royal Apartments: You can tour the rooms where kings and queens once stayed. The chapel is particularly beautiful with its painted ceiling.
  • The Real Tennis Court: This is a must-see! Built in 1539, it is the oldest “Real Tennis” court still in use today. If you’re lucky, you might even see a game being played. It’s very different from the modern version of the sport.
  • The Gardens: The grounds are immaculately kept. There is a formal garden, a huge orchard, and plenty of space for a gentle stroll. It’s a very peaceful place to sit and take in the view of the Lomond Hills.
  • The Village: After visiting the palace, take time to walk around Falkland itself. It has lovely little shops, traditional pubs, and a historic fountain in the square.

Best For and Time Spent
Falkland Palace is great for couples, seniors, and fans of history. Families will enjoy the gardens and the tennis court, though the palace interior is quite formal.

  • Duration: Most people spend about 2 hours exploring the palace and gardens.

Helpful Tips for Your Visit

  • Outlander Fans: Falkland was used as the filming location for “Inverness” in the 1940s scenes of the show. You’ll recognise the fountain and many of the buildings in the square.
  • Parking: There is a small car park in the village, but it fills up fast. There is usually more space in the larger car park just a short walk away near the edge of the village.
  • Savings: The palace is managed by the National Trust for Scotland, so members get in for free.
  • Food: The village has several excellent cafes and pubs. The Covenanter Hotel (overlooking the square) is a popular choice for a meal.
