This isn’t your average “look but don’t touch” museum; it’s a massive, hands-on playground for the curious. Located right next to Newcastle Central Station, it’s the kind of place where you can go from building a LEGO masterpiece to exploring the furthest reaches of the galaxy in a single afternoon.
The Big Highlights: You have to check out the Planetarium—it’s the biggest in the North of England and makes you feel like you’re actually floating through space. For the kids (and competitive adults), the Experiment Zone is a must-see where you can use real lab equipment to do your own science. There’s also a dedicated Space Zone and a rotating cast of “blockbuster” exhibitions, often featuring things like dinosaurs or space robots.

Age Groups: It’s a total winner for families. There’s a dedicated Play Zone for under-7s so the little ones don’t get overwhelmed, while the Experiment Zone is strictly for ages 7+ due to the real chemicals and equipment used.

Budgeting & Food: If you’re a local family, an annual membership usually pays for itself in just two or three visits. For food, the Times Square Cafe on-site is handy, but many regular visitors recommend bringing a packed lunch to eat in the designated indoor picnic area to save some pennies.
Top Tip: People usually spend about 3 to 4 hours here. If you’re visiting in the winter months (usually November to February), they set up a massive open-air ice rink right outside in Times Square, which is a great “add-on” for a full day out.
