WWT Washington Wetland Centre
Pattinson, Washington | NE38 8LE | Tyne and Wear
If your family loves animals and being outdoors, this 100-acre site is a total winner. It’s far more than just a “duck pond”—it’s a massive natural playground where you can get up close with colourful flamingos, playful otters, and rare birds from all over the world. It’s very immersive; you can buy a bag of grain and have geese and ducks eating right out of your hand, which is always a hit with the kids (and makes for great photos!).

There’s a fantastic play area called “Playscape” for burning off energy, and plenty of hidden hides for those who want to play explorer. It’s a very “gentle” day out that feels a million miles away from the city.
Budget & Food: It’s worth checking if an annual membership is for you, as WWT centres are all over the UK. The cafe has amazing views over the water, but there are countless picnic spots dotted around the woods. Parking is free and plentiful. Most visitors spend 4 to 5 hours here to really see everything at a relaxed pace.
