Whickham Thorns Outdoor Activity Centre is an absolute gem for families and groups looking to burn off some energy in the fresh air. Located at Market Lane, Dunston, Gateshead, NE11 9NX, this 50-acre woodland site is run by the Scouts but is open to everyone, offering a massive range of “proper” outdoor adventures that go way beyond your standard local park.

What’s the Fun Stuff?

There is so much to get stuck into here that you’ll probably find one visit isn’t enough. It’s famous for its 40m dry ski slope, where you can try your hand at skiing or the much-loved snow tubing. If you’ve never tried tubing, it’s basically spinning and sliding down the slope on a giant inflatable ring—it’s brilliant fun for both kids and adults!

For the climbers, they have a dedicated boulder park (the first of its kind in Britain!) and indoor climbing walls. If you prefer staying closer to the ground, you can take on the obstacle course, try your luck at archery, or get competitive with a game of laser tag in the woods. They also have mountain bike trails, orienteering, and high ropes for those who don’t mind heights.
