Victoria Tunnel Tour

Victoria Tunnel Tour

Ouseburn Valley, Newcastle | NE1 2PQ

If you want to see a side of Newcastle that most people walk right over without knowing it exists, this is the one. This preserved 19th-century wagonway runs deep under the city streets and was famously used as an air-raid shelter during WWII. It’s an atmospheric, slightly chilly, and utterly fascinating trip back in time. You’ll wear a hard hat and follow a guide who will tell you stories of the tunnel’s history, from hauling coal to the Tyne to sheltering families during the Blitz.

This attraction is strictly for those aged 7 and above, mainly because it’s dark and can be a little spooky for very small children. It’s also worth noting that it’s not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs due to the narrow paths and blast walls.

For those watching the budget, the tour now operates on an annual pass model, meaning once you’ve paid for your first tour, you can often return for free within the year. Parking is easiest at the Ouseburn Arches car park nearby.

After your tour, you’re in the heart of the Ouseburn Valley, which is perfect for grabbing a bite at one of the many quirky independent cafes or visiting the nearby Ouseburn Farm.
