Seven Stories: National Centre for Children’s Books

Ouseburn Valley, Newcastle | NE1 2PQ | Tyne and Wear

Located in a stunning converted Victorian mill in the trendy Ouseburn Valley, this is a seven-story “temple” to the magic of stories. It’s not just a library; it’s an immersive world where books come to life.

What to See: Each floor has a different theme. You’ll find original manuscripts and drawings from famous authors, cozy storytelling corners, and “dressed-up” galleries where kids can step into the world of their favorite characters. The Attic is a particularly magical, quiet spot for reading.

Age Group: While it’s obviously a dream for primary school-aged kids, it’s actually a really nostalgic trip for adults too, especially when you see the original art from books you read as a child.

Budgeting & Food: The Seven Stories Coffee Shop is lovely and does great themed treats, but the Ouseburn area is famous for its independent food scene. The Cluny is just next door for a “proper” lunch, or you can walk five minutes to find the Ouseburn Farm (which is free!) to see some animals.

Top Tip: Most people spend 2 to 3 hours here. It’s worth checking if there are any specific author workshops or craft sessions happening on the day you visit, as these are often the highlight of the trip.
