Whitley Bay Ice Rink

Whitley Bay Ice Rink

Whitley Bay | NE25 8HP | Tyne and Wear

A total classic for a “cool” day out. It’s one of only two permanent public rinks in the North East and has a real old-school charm that local families have loved for decades.

What’s the Fun? Whether you’re a total wobbly-legged beginner or think you’re the next Olympic skater, it’s all about the atmosphere. They run family sessions at a gentler pace, but if you want something louder, look out for the disco sessions where the lights go down and the music goes up. It’s also the home of the Whitley Warriors ice hockey team, so catching a game is a brilliant, high-energy experience.

Age Groups: Suitable for everyone! They offer lessons for toddlers as young as 2 years old right up to adults.

Budgeting & Food: Look for the family tickets which usually cover two adults and two children plus skate hire—it’s a much better deal than paying individually. The on-site cafe is very basic (think hot chocolates and burgers), so for a nicer meal, you’re better off heading five minutes down the road into Whitley Bay town centre for plenty of independent cafes.

Visitor Insights: Regulars suggest wearing thick socks and maybe even a pair of gloves, even in summer—it’s properly chilly in there! Also, it’s a bit “retro” in its decor, so expect a nostalgic vibe rather than a modern glitzy arena.
