 Tanfield Railway

Marley Hill, Sunniside | NE16 5ET | Tyne and Wear

Step back in time on the world’s oldest railway! This isn’t a high-speed commute; it’s a nostalgic journey through the beautiful Causey Woods on a steam train that feels like it belongs in a film set.

What to Do: Visit the Marley Hill Engine Shed, which is the oldest working shed in the world. You can see where the massive steam engines are maintained and chat with the enthusiastic volunteers who keep them running. It’s like a living museum rather than a static display.

The Experience: The highlight is definitely the six-mile round trip on a vintage steam locomotive. The carriages are old-school wood and brass, and you can really smell the coal smoke in the air. Make sure you get off at Causey Arch station to see the oldest surviving stone railway bridge in the world—it’s a spectacular photo spot and a lovely place for a short woodland stroll.

Budgeting & Food: A great tip for families is that their tickets are usually “Rover” tickets, meaning you can hop on and off the trains all day long. For food, the Tommy Armstrong Tea Rooms at Andrews House station serves traditional cakes and tea. However, Causey Arch is a prime spot for a woodland picnic, and there is plenty of free parking at the main Marley Hill site.

Timing: Most visitors spend about 3 hours here to enjoy a full return journey and a look around the sheds. It’s generally a “weekend only” attraction, usually running from March through to October, though they do very popular special events in December.
