Angel of the North
Low Eighton, Gateshead | NE9 7TY | Tyne and Wear
You can’t visit the North East without saying hello to “The Geltie,” as some locals call it. It is one of the most viewed pieces of art in the world, standing 20 metres tall with a wingspan almost as wide as a jumbo jet.
What to Do: While you can see it from the A1 motorway, you haven’t really experienced it until you stand at its feet. It’s surprisingly peaceful up on the hill. Most people spend their time taking creative photos—trying to look like they are “holding” the wings—or simply enjoying the view across the Gateshead hills.

Fun Fact: Because it’s built on the site of an old coal mine, the foundations go down 20 metres deep to keep it from blowing over in the North East wind!
Budgeting & Practicality: This is one of the best value stops you can make because it is completely free. There is a small, free car park right at the base. There aren’t any cafes or toilets on-site, so it’s more of a 30-minute “stop and see” location.
Combine Your Visit: Since it’s a quick visit, many people combine it with a trip to Whickham Thorns or go for a meal in the nearby village of Low Fell, which is packed with great independent restaurants and bars.
