Newcastle Racecourse
High Gosforth Park, Newcastle | NE3 5HP | Tyne and Wear
Set within the sprawling 800-acre Gosforth Park, this is one of the busiest and most popular racecourses in the UK. Whether you know your horses or just want a reason to get dressed up, it’s a high-energy day out.
The Vibe: It’s famous for its All-Weather track, meaning they host racing all year round. The biggest event is the Northumberland Plate (usually in June), which is essentially the North East’s version of Royal Ascot—expect big hats, fancy suits, and a massive party atmosphere.

Family Fun: Look out for their Family Fun Days (usually held on bank holidays). On these days, the focus shifts from betting to entertainment, with giant inflatables, face painting, and characters for the kids to meet, often with free entry for under-18s.
Budgeting & Food: Tickets are much cheaper if you book in advance online. If you’re on a budget, choose the Grandstand or Picnic enclosures rather than the Premier tiers. Food can be pricey inside, but on certain “Family” or “Picnic” days, you are allowed to bring your own food into designated areas—just check the specific race day rules first.
Top Tip: Parking is free and plentiful, but if you’re heading there for a big Saturday meet, traffic can be a nightmare. Many locals take the Metro to Regent Centre and use the free shuttle bus that often runs on big race days.
