Belfast Castle

Belfast Castle is a stunning sandstone building tucked away on the lower slopes of Cave Hill. It looks like something straight out of a fairy tale, with its grand towers and beautiful gardens. Because it sits high above the city, it offers some of the most spectacular views of Belfast and the Lough below. It is a much more relaxed and quiet spot compared to the busy city centre.

What to See and Do

  • The Gardens: The manicured gardens are lovely for a stroll. A fun thing to look out for is the Cat Garden. There are nine different cat themed surprises hidden around the garden, including statues and mosaics. It is a big hit with children who enjoy trying to find them all.
  • The Architecture: Even if you don’t go inside, walking around the exterior is worth the trip. The grand staircase on the outside of the building is a very popular spot for photos.
  • Cave Hill Visitor Centre: Located inside the castle, this small basement museum tells you all about the history of the castle and the natural wildlife found in the surrounding parkland.
  • Walking Trails: The castle is the perfect starting point for exploring Cave Hill Country Park. There are several paths that lead from the castle grounds up towards the summit.

For Walkers and Hikers

If you fancy a more active visit, you can try the most popular route:

  • The Cave Hill Trail: This is a circular route that starts and ends at the castle. It is about 4.5 miles long.
  • The Terrain: Be aware that this is a challenging walk. It is quite steep and hilly as you climb toward the “Napoleon’s Nose” crag.
  • The Surface: The paths are a mix of gravel and dirt. It can get very muddy and slippery after rain, so proper walking boots are definitely recommended.
  • Points of Interest: Along the way, you will pass several caves and ancient earthworks. The view from the top is often described as the best in Northern Ireland.

Good to Know Before You Go

  • Average Visit: If you are just visiting the castle and gardens, about 1 hour is enough. If you plan on doing the full hike up the hill, allow at least 3 hours.
  • Who is it for? It is perfect for couples looking for a romantic walk, families who want some fresh air, and photographers.
  • Parking & Food: There is free parking on-site, which is a great bonus. For food, the Castle Tavern in the basement is a cozy spot for a drink or a meal, and there is also a more formal restaurant upstairs.
  • Events: Since the castle is a very popular wedding venue, some parts of the building or gardens might occasionally be closed for private events, but the parkland usually remains open.

Nearby Attractions

Since you are already on the hillside, you are very close to Belfast Zoo, which is just a short drive around the corner. If you want to see more of the local history, the Antrim Road area nearby has some beautiful old architecture and local shops to explore.
