Best for: History lovers, walkers, couples, families, city breaks
Average visit time: Around 1 to 2 hours
The Derry City Walls are one of the best-preserved historic walls in Europe and offer a unique way to explore the city from above street level. You can walk the full circuit around the old city, taking in views, history and some of Derry’s most important landmarks along the way.
The walk is roughly 1 mile and forms a complete loop, so it is easy to follow and not too demanding. The surface is mostly flat and paved, making it suitable for most visitors. There are steps in places, but plenty of access points where you can join or leave the walls.

As you walk around, you will pass gates, towers and cannons, along with views over the city, the River Foyle and the modern streets below. It is a great mix of old and new, and you get a real sense of how the city developed.
There are also information boards and guided tours available if you want to understand more about the history, including the famous sieges and events that shaped the city.
The walls are right next to the city centre, so it is very easy to combine this with shops, cafés, restaurants and other attractions. The nearby Peace Bridge and riverside walks are also worth including if you want to extend your time outdoors.

This is suitable for all ages and works well as a relaxed activity during a city break. It is not physically demanding, but there is plenty to see and take in.
Good to know: The walk is outdoors and exposed, so weather can make a difference. Comfortable shoes are a good idea, especially if you plan to explore the city further afterwards.
