Tayto Factory Tour

Tayto Factory Tour is a real treat for anyone who grew up with these iconic crisps. Located inside the historic Tandragee Castle, it’s one of the few places where you can see a modern snack factory operating inside a building that looks like it belongs in a fairy tale. It is often called the “home of Mr. Tayto,” and the smell of frying potatoes as you walk through the gates is unmistakable.

What to Experience

The Production Line: This is the highlight of the visit. You get to walk through the actual factory floor and see the entire process. You’ll see the raw potatoes being washed, peeled, sliced, and fried. Watching the high-speed seasoning and bagging machines is surprisingly mesmerising.

The Tasting: One of the best parts is getting to try the crisps when they are still warm, straight off the production line. Many visitors say they taste even better when they are fresh like that.

Mr. Tayto: You will likely see plenty of images and statues of the famous mascot, and if you’re lucky, a costumed version might even make an appearance. It’s a very light-hearted and fun atmosphere.

The Castle: While the focus is on the crisps, the setting is unique. You are walking through a 19th-century castle, and the contrast between the old stone walls and the high-tech stainless steel machinery is quite a sight.

Good to Know Before You Go

Average Visit: The guided tour usually lasts about 90 minutes to 2 hours.

Who is it for? It is a massive hit with families and school groups, but adults who have a nostalgic love for the brand enjoy it just as much.

Age Restrictions: For safety reasons on the factory floor, children usually need to be at least 5 years old to join the tour.

Booking in Advance: This is essential. Because it is a working factory, they only run a few tours a day and they often book up weeks or even months in advance. You can’t just turn up on the day.

Clothing: You will be asked to wear a high-visibility vest and a hairnet (and a beard net if necessary!) which always makes for some funny family photos. You also need to wear flat, closed-toe shoes for safety.
