This is one of the most talked-about walks in Northern Ireland, and once you’re on it, you’ll see why. The Cuilcagh Boardwalk, often called the “Stairway to Heaven”, takes you out across open bogland and up to a high viewpoint with wide, sweeping views.

The route starts fairly gently along a long wooden boardwalk that stretches across the bog. It’s mostly flat to begin with and easy underfoot, which makes a nice change from rough terrain. After that, things get more challenging as you reach the famous stepped section that climbs up towards the summit.
The climb is steady rather than technical, but there are quite a lot of steps, so it does take some effort. Once you reach the top, the views are the reward – on a clear day you can see for miles across Fermanagh and beyond. It’s one of those places where you’ll probably want to stop, take it in and grab a few photos.
The route is linear (out and back), so you return the same way. That makes it easy to follow, but you’ll want to pace yourself so you’ve got energy for the return leg.

Route details (main trail):

There are no cafés or facilities along the route itself, so it’s best to bring water and something to eat. Weather can change quickly up on the mountain, so a waterproof jacket is a good idea even if it looks fine when you set off.
Good to know: It can get very busy, especially in good weather, and parking may be limited. Early starts tend to make for a more enjoyable experience. The exposed sections can feel tough in wind or rain, so pick your day if you can.
Nearby ideas: You’re in a scenic part of County Fermanagh, so it works well combined with something more relaxed afterwards like a boat trip on Lough Erne or a short stop in nearby villages to unwind after the walk.
