Exploris Aquarium

County: County Down
Postcode: BT22 1PF
Best for: Families, children, indoor days, animal lovers
Average visit time: Around 1.5 to 2.5 hours

Exploris Aquarium is a good all-weather option, especially if you’ve got children who enjoy animals and sea life. It’s not massive, but it’s well set out and easy to get around, which actually makes it quite a relaxed visit.

Inside, you’ll find a range of tanks with different marine species, from colourful fish and jellyfish to sharks and rays. There’s plenty to look at without it feeling overwhelming, and children can move at their own pace without getting bored too quickly.

One of the main highlights is the outdoor area, where you can often see seals. These tend to be a favourite, especially during feeding times. There are also penguins, which always draw a crowd and add a bit of personality to the visit.

It’s a mix of indoor and outdoor areas, so even on a dull day you’ll still get a decent experience. The educational side is there if you want it, but it doesn’t feel too heavy, so it still works as a fun day out.

There’s a café on site for drinks and simple meals. Like most attractions, it’s convenient but not the cheapest, so some visitors keep it light or eat before arriving.

Good to know: This is best suited to families and younger visitors. Older children and adults may enjoy it, but it’s more of a shorter visit unless you take your time with everything.

Nearby ideas: Portaferry itself is a nice little coastal spot, so it’s worth having a wander after your visit. You can also take the short ferry across Strangford Lough and combine it with a visit to Castle Ward for a longer day out.
