Kelso Abbey was once one of the most powerful and grandest buildings in Scotland. Today, only a small part of it remains, but that fragment is absolutely massive and very impressive. It stands right in the heart of Kelso, with its dark stone reaching high into the sky.
The main thing to see is the incredible architecture. Even though only a portion is left, you can see the unique style that makes it different from other abbeys in the area. It’s a perfect “stop-off” while you are exploring Kelso. You can walk through the small grounds, look up at the towering walls, and get a sense of how enormous it must have been hundreds of years ago.

It’s a great spot for anyone, as it’s so easy to access. Since it’s right next to the shops and the river, you can see it without needing to plan your whole day around it.
Good to know: Entry is free. It’s located just off the main town square, which is famous for its cobbles and independent shops. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants just a few steps away for lunch or a quick tea.
