This was the home of Sir Walter Scott, the famous Scottish writer. It is a stunning building that he designed himself, and it’s filled with his massive collection of quirky and historic objects—like old armor, library books, and even Rob Roy’s gun. The house itself is beautiful, but it’s the stories behind all the items inside that really make it special.

Outside, the experience continues with formal gardens and beautiful woodland paths that lead down to the River Tweed. There is a lot of space for children to explore, and the paths are great for a family stroll. It’s the kind of place where you can spend half a day comfortably, moving between the grand house and the fresh air of the estate.

It appeals to almost everyone because it combines a grand “stately home” feel with the personality of a very creative man. Even if you haven’t read his books, you’ll likely find his collection of “treasures” fascinating.

Good to know: There is a large, modern visitor centre with a free exhibition and a very good cafe called “Ochiltree’s” which has a balcony overlooking the grounds. Parking is plentiful but there is usually a small charge for it.
