Mellerstain is often described as one of Scotland’s greatest mansions. It is famous for its incredible interior design, especially the ornate ceilings and colorful rooms. It feels very light and elegant compared to the older, heavier castles in the region.
The gardens here are a major highlight. They are laid out in “tiers” or terraces that lead your eye down toward a large lake. It is a very peaceful place to walk and is usually much quieter than the more famous attractions. It’s perfect for couples or friends who want to enjoy beautiful scenery and high-end design without the big crowds.

Children will enjoy the wide-open lawns and the lakeside walks, but the main house is more of a “look and admire” experience. It’s a very relaxing destination that feels quite hidden away and special.
Good to know: There is a courtyard cafe that serves delicious home-baking. The house is only open on certain days of the week, usually during the warmer months, so it’s a good idea to check before you set off.
