Jedburgh Abbey is a magnificent, roofless ruin that dominates the town skyline. It is famous for its towering stone arches and the way the light filters through the empty windows. It feels incredibly spacious and peaceful, allowing you to walk through the long central aisle where monks once walked centuries ago.

Visitors can explore the different levels of the ruin, including some of the spiral stairs that lead to higher viewing points. There is a small herb garden on the grounds which is a lovely place to sit and imagine how the monks used the plants for medicine and cooking. It is a very visual experience, making it a favorite spot for anyone who enjoys taking photos of historic landscapes.

This is a great stop for families because there is plenty of open space for children to walk around while learning about the past. It’s an outdoor site, so it’s best enjoyed on a fair-weather day, though the massive stone walls provide some shelter.
Good to know: Historic Scotland memberships often cover entry here. There is a visitor centre with a small exhibition about the abbey’s history. The site is largely accessible, though some of the higher walkways involve narrow stairs.
