Melrose is arguably the most picturesque town in the Borders. It sits at the foot of the three-peaked Eildon Hills and is centered around a beautiful market square. It’s a very “high-end” feeling town with lovely independent boutiques, bookshops, and antique stores that are great for browsing.
Visitors will love walking from the town centre straight to the ruins of Melrose Abbey or exploring the Priorwood Garden, which is famous for its dried flowers. If you are feeling active, the walk up the Eildon Hills is the most popular route in the area. It’s a bit of a steep climb on well-worn paths, but the 360-degree view from the top is one of the best in Scotland. For a gentler time, the riverside paths along the Tweed are level and very peaceful.

Good to know: Parking can be busy on weekends, but there is a large main car park near the abbey. The town is famous for being the home of “Rugby Sevens,” and things can get very lively during the tournament in April!
