Jedburgh Castle Jail and Museum

County: Roxburghshire
Postcode: TD8 6AS
Best for: Families, history fans, and people who like “spooky” stories
Average visit time: 1 to 1.5 hours

This isn’t actually a castle, but a prison built to look like one! It sits on the site of the original Jedburgh Castle. It’s a very interesting place to visit because you can walk through the old cell blocks and see what life was like for prisoners hundreds of years ago.

It’s great for children because it’s quite interactive and a bit “creepy” in a fun way. There are lots of displays about local history and the famous people from the area. Because it sits at the top of the town, it also has some of the best views looking down over the Abbey and the surrounding hills.

Good to know: Entry is often free or very low cost, making it a great budget-friendly stop. It is a bit of a steep walk up the hill from the town centre, so keep that in mind if you have mobility issues.
