Traquair is the oldest continually inhabited house in Scotland and it is absolutely full of character. It has a very long history of supporting Scottish royalty and has many “secret” features, including hidden stairs used by priests in the past.
What makes it a hit with families is the massive hedge maze in the garden—it’s one of the largest in Scotland and is genuinely fun to get lost in. There is also a brewery on-site in the old wing of the house that produces traditional ales, which adults usually find very interesting. You can see the old copper vats and learn how the beer is made.

It’s a great choice for a day trip because there is so much variety: a historic house, a fun maze, woodland walks, and a craft gallery. It feels very friendly and welcoming, making it a top pick for a family outing.
Good to know: There is a playground for younger children and a cafe in the walled garden. Look out for the famous “Bear Gates” at the end of the drive—they have been closed since the 1700s and supposedly won’t be opened again until a Stuart king returns to the throne!
