National Glass Centre

National Glass Centre

Liberty Way, Sunderland | SR6 0GL | Tyne and Wear

This is one of those places that sounds a bit “niche” until you step inside and see a 1000-degree furnace in action. It’s a massive, stylish building right on the riverbanks where you can watch world-class glassblowers turning molten blobs into incredible art. The highlight for any group is the live glass-blowing demonstrations; the heat from the furnace and the skill of the artists are genuinely mesmerising.

For a fun experience, you can actually book a session to have a go yourself—making anything from a glass bauble to a paperweight. It’s incredibly satisfying to say “I made that” when you leave! Kids usually love the “Glass Yard” where they can explore the various exhibitions.

Budget & Practicality: The best bit? Entry is completely free, including the demonstrations. There is a huge car park on-site, and while the Glass Yard Cafe is award-winning and great for a treat, you’re right by the marina, which is a lovely spot for a walk and a picnic. You’ll probably spend about 2 to 3 hours here, making it a great “combined” trip with a visit to the nearby Roker beach.
