Paxton House is a beautiful neo-classical mansion sitting right on the banks of the River Tweed. Inside, it holds a massive collection of paintings—it’s actually one of the largest private galleries in Scotland. The furniture is also world-class, but the house manages to feel warm and welcoming rather than cold and formal.

Outside is where families will spend a lot of their time. There is a dedicated “Adventure Play Park,” a boat trip on the river (usually during the summer), and miles of woodland and riverside trails. It’s a brilliant place for a walk, and you can even follow a path that takes you under the famous Union Chain Bridge nearby.

Good to know: There is a very good tea room in the old stables. They often have seasonal trails for children (like Easter egg hunts or autumn fairy trails). Parking is easy and usually free.
