The Great Tapestry of Scotland

County: Selkirkshire
Postcode: TD1 1BN
Best for: Art lovers, history fans, and anyone looking for a world-class indoor attraction
Average visit time: 2 to 2.5 hours

This is a purpose-built gallery in Galashiels that houses one of the world’s longest community arts projects. It tells the entire story of Scotland—from millions of years ago to the present day—through 160 stunning hand-stitched panels.

Even if you aren’t usually interested in “sewing,” the scale and detail of this work are incredible. Each panel is like a huge, colorful painting filled with tiny details and stories. It’s a very visual and emotional way to learn about Scottish history. It’s completely indoors and very modern, making it a brilliant choice for a rainy day.

Good to know: There is a fantastic cafe on-site and a shop selling local crafts. It is located very close to the Galashiels transport interchange, so it’s easy to reach by bus or train from Edinburgh.
