Newcastle has a dark and grizzly past, and there’s no better way to discover it than on a guided evening walk. These tours take you through the hidden “chares” (narrow alleys) and historic spots like the Castle Keep and Black Gate, where you’ll hear spine-tingling tales of unsolved murders, local hauntings, and the city’s old execution sites. It’s a brilliant way to see the city’s stunning architecture in a whole new, slightly eerie light.
Because the stories can get quite graphic and sometimes include strong language for effect, many of these tours are strictly for those aged 16 or 18 and over. However, some companies offer “True Crime” walks that are suitable for older children (around 12+) if they have a taste for the macabre. These tours are purely walking-based and usually last about 90 minutes, so wear comfy shoes! They often start and end near city-centre pubs, which is handy if you need a “stiff drink” to calm your nerves afterwards. Since they usually take place in the evening, you can often find cheaper parking in city-centre multi-storeys after 6:00 PM.
