Beamish is an absolute blast and a total must-visit! It’s located on the County Durham and Tyne & Wear border (DH9 0RG). Think of it less like a dry museum and more like a massive, immersive time-machine village where you can touch, smell, and taste the past.

You aren’t just looking at old buildings; you are living in them. You can hop on and off vintage trams and buses to get around, which is a highlight in itself.

• 1910s Town: This is the heart of the action. You can pop into the chemist to see how they made remedies, visit the bakery for a fresh treat, or watch the printer at work. The Sun Inn pub is a real, functioning pub where you can grab a drink in a setting that feels like a film set.
• The Pit Village & Colliery: You can actually head underground for a guided tour of a real coal mine. It’s a bit dark and tight, so keep that in mind, but it’s a brilliant experience. Back on the surface, the schoolhouse and miners’ cottages give you a real sense of community life.
• 1940s Farm: Get a taste of life during the war, complete with a farmhouse, outbuildings, and occasionally some very vocal farm animals.
• 1950s Terrace: This newer addition is a huge hit, featuring a hair salon, a fish and chip shop, and even a mid-century cinema.

• The Unlimited Pass: This is the big one. Your entry ticket is actually an Unlimited Pass, meaning you pay once and can come back as many times as you like for a whole year. If you live nearby or plan to visit the region again, it’s incredible value.
• Food Strategy: Davy’s Fried Fish Shop in the Pit Village is world-famous because they still cook in beef dripping. It smells amazing, but the queues can get seriously long during peak times. A pro tip from regular visitors: bring a picnic. There are loads of benches and grassy spots, like the village green, where you can eat while watching the trams rattle past. This saves a fortune and means you don’t waste an hour standing in line.
• Old-Fashioned Sweets: Make a beeline for the sweet shop early in the day. The handmade cinder toffee and acid drops are legendary, but like the chippy, it gets very busy later on.

You easily need a full day here. The site is spread across 300 acres, and because there is so much to walk through and interact with, time just disappears. It’s a physical day out with a fair bit of walking, though the trams help save your legs!
