Walkers and Cyclist in Tyne and Wear

Best Routes: The C2C (Coast to Coast – Sunderland Section)

Sunderland Seafront to Washington | Tyne and Wear

For walkers and cyclists, this section of the famous “Sea to Sea” route is a gem. It’s mostly off-road, using old converted railway lines, meaning it is level, paved, and very safe for families with bikes or buggies.

Starting at the Roker Pier, you follow the river Wear inland. You’ll pass the Stadium of Light and the National Glass Centre, giving you plenty of excuses to stop for a break. The surface is smooth tarmac, so it’s easy going on the legs!

Nearby Refreshments: You are spoilt for choice at the start in Roker with dozens of trendy cafes and fish and chip shops. As you head further inland towards Washington, things get quieter, so carrying a water bottle is a good idea. It’s a linear route, so you can go as far as you like and then simply turn back. It’s a great way to see the industrial heritage of the river mixed with new green spaces.
