Linton Zoo

Linton Zoo is one of the most popular things to do in Cambridge and is home to around 250 animals from nearly 100 different species that includes a fine collection of big cats such as Snow, Black, African Leopards, African Lions, and Amur Tigers.

There is a Lemur breeding centre, which houses seven different Lemur species and features a visitor walk-through area that allow you to get close to the animals. Some of the more dangerous animals have viewing windows instead of bars again to allow you to get as close as possible but still remain safe.

At weekends and during school holidays there are usually a variety of special organised activities and events, such as animal encounter and feeding and keeper talk sessions. Linton Zoo is one of the great things to do in Cambridge.

Raptor Foundation

A bird in flight at the Raptor FoundationBird handling demonstration at the Raptor Foundation

The Raptor Foundation is home to over 300 birds of prey and over 40 species. The Raptor Foundation is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of injured birds of prey. In the summer there are three flying displays per day and in winter two.

The most impressive attractions are the experience days and courses. The type of experiences can be just meeting and holding the birds. Other courses involve taking the birds for a countryside stroll and allowing the birds to hunt before enticing them to return to your arm. There is a special twilight experience where you get up close and personal with owls. Finally there are photographic days where you can get fabulous close ups of the the birds. Many of the experiences and courses would make ideal gifts.

Elgoods Brewery Tour & Beer Festival

Maning the pumps at Elgoods Brewery tour and beer festival

Visitors can see where the brewing begins as hot brewing liquor is blended with the ground malt to make the mash that adds the malty flavour to the sweet wort.

The hops are then added and are boiled into the wort to add the bitterness and aroma. The hops are then separated in the newly renovated 50's Hop Back, now lined in stainless steel, and the wort is then chilled on an enclosed palte heat exchanger en-route to the Fermenting Vessels.

After the yeast has done its work the beer is moved to the modernized Tank Room for quality control checks, which include the all important tasting, before being packaged into either casks (for "Real Ale") or kegs (For brewery filtered & conditioned beer) here at North Brink.

The tour is popular so book in advance to avoid disappointment. Watch out for the Elgoods Beer Festival.

The next event is: TBA

Nene Valley Railway

Trains at the Nene Valley Railway

Nene Valley Railway is a seven and a half mile heritage railway that runs between Peterborough Nene Valley and Yarwell Junction.

If you visit Cambridge on summer weekends you may be able to enjoy the additional events such as demonstrating how mail used to be moved around the country by train and how it was collected 'on the move' using equipment fixed to the line-side.

Occasionally they also run vintage buses and you can enjoy a 45 minute trip. See their website for dates. For children Thomas the Tank engine is a frequent visitor and one of the popular things to do in cambridge with kids.

Flag Fen Bronze age centre

Reconstructed hut at Flag Fen Bronze age centre

If you have a keen interest in Bronze age Britain you should visit Cambridge Flag Fen Bronze age centre. Flag Fen archaeology park is home to a unique wooden causeway some 3,500 years old that comprises over 60,000 timbers arranged in five very long rows (around 1 km) connecting Whittlesey Island with Peterborough across the wet fenlands. Part way across the structure, a small island was formed which is where it is presumed that the religious ceremonies occurred.

The preservation hall at Flag Fen Bronze age centre

As this is considered to be an extremely important site it now has a well-organised visitor centre with museum and exhibitions. The centre contains a preservation hall where one section of the timbers is preserved in-situ and prevented from drying out by misting with water. Also at the site are reconstructions of two Bronze Age roundhouses and one from the Iron Age. There is also an exposed section of the Roman road known as the Fen Causeway which crosses the site and a reconstruction of a Prehistoric droveway.

On a visit to you will be able to Walk into reconstructed pre-historic houses and step back in time almost 3,000 years to discover what family life was like then. To make things more authentic there are a number of animals similar to those kept at the time such as soapy sheep.

Flag Fen welcomes visitors through the summer months (April - October) and is a great spot for a picnic on a sunny day. On rainy days you can shelter in the indoor cafe and museum.
