Westbury White Horse & Bratton Camp (pictured above). This horse was cut into the landscape in 1778 but it is believed to be on top of an older white horse that was thought to commemorate the defeat  of the Danes in AD878. The horse is situated just below the Iron age hill fort of Bratton Camp.

Steam - Museum of the Great Western Railway

Steam - the museum of the great western railway - WiltshireOne of the displays at Steam - the museum of the great western railway in Wiltshire

Steam the Museum of the Great Western Railway is in the heart of the former Swindon Railway Works. The museum has a great variety of hands-on exhibits, locomotives and displays. and tells the story of the men and women who built, operated and travelled on the Great Western Railway.

The story is brought to life with videos, hands-on exhibits and interactive displays. As visitors pass through the museum/works they get a sense of the conditions in each stage of construction: - the heat and grime experienced in the Foundry; the evocative smell of wood and the sights and sounds of the Machine Shop Lathes, drills and slotters; finally the colossal sounds in the Boiler Shop - where the noise endured by the workers meant that many were deaf by the age of 30.
