Fairlands Valley Park

Fairlands Valley Park is home to a great sailing club that is more like a water sports centre. The centre uses the 11 acre lake set in 120 acres of parkland to provide a number of different activities such as Sailing, windsurfing, kayaks. Powerboats, Power Kiting and Climbing.

The lake is used for the centre's dinghy, kayak, windsurfing and powerboat courses. All the courses are staffed by qualified instructors whose aim is to ensure that you enjoy the courses and learn in safety.

The park is also ideal for other activities. The lake waters are well stocked with fish and are popular with anglers although I'm sure the powerboats aren't popular with anglers. For joggers there is a Trim Track should they wish to use it. Anyone interested in taking a Hot air balloon flight from Fairlands Valley Park can arrange this through Adventure Balloons.

The Snow Centre - Hemel Hempstead

The Snow Centre - Hemel Hempstead is a fantastic state of the art indoor ski and snow boarding centre with a 160 meter slope for experienced skiers and an easier recreational slope for beginners. There are lots of challenges such as jumps, ramps etc for experienced skiers to attempt.

Skiers and snowboarders of all abilities are welcome. The centre offers a wide range of lessons and passes, making sure theres something for everyone even if you only want to zoom down the slope on a sledge or make a snowman in the snow play area. The centre even hires clothes to wear, except socks and gloves that can purchased - essential as temperatures are between -2c and -6c. If you don't want to have a go then you watch and have a cup of coffee in the cafe that overlooks the slopes. Brilliant place.

Paradise Wildlife Park - Broxbourne

Paradise Wildlife Park is one of the most popular things to do in Hertfordshire and a fantastic fun day out for families. Visitors can see over 240 different species of animals, listen to talks from keepers and unlike most zoos you can actually touch and feed many of the animals in its vast collection. New additions to the Park in recent years include a rare white lion, a white tiger and a beaver colony.

Apart from the animal collection there are 3 adventure playgrounds where children love the Pirates Cove installation, the popular Thomas the Tank Engine and the Special Place. Other popular fun activities include Tumble Jungle, Tractor Trailer Rides, a Woodland Walk, Paradise Lagoon paddling pool, bouncy castles, helter-skelter and the roundabout. There are a few other activities such as the Dinosaur Woodland Railway, Formula Fun, Jungle Gems, Safari Adventure Golf that have a small additional charge.

In the summer months a very popular activity for family members is a swim in the Paradise Lagoon, where entry is free of charge and complementary swimming nappies are supplied for babies.

Gosling Sports Park

Gosling Sports Park is a 50-acre sports and leisure complex in picturesque Welwyn Garden City. The centre has lots of facilities such as a Dry ski slope, swimming pool, Gym, tennis courts, ice rink, football fields, spa, Jungle Mania for kids and a comedy club.

Ice Skating - Planet Ice

Planet Ice has one of the most successful 'Learn to Skate' courses in the UK. The program teaches fundamental movement and basic ice skating skills for skaters of all ages in 10 stages. Courses are tailored to suit age groups so there are adult, junior and toddler groups. There are toys such as penguin supports that are designed to encourage toddlers to show an interest in ice skating.

Royston Cave

This small man-made cavern, shaped like a beehive, is believed to date from the 14th century and it's most remarkable feature is an extensive range of wall carvings representing the Crucifixion, the Holy Family and several saints, among them St Katherine, St Laurence and St Christopher. Other carvings are less easily identified and some have been interpreted as possible pagan symbols. Royston Cave is open to the public in the summer months on Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday afternoons between Easter and October.

Welwyn Roman Baths

Welwyn Roman Baths are a small part of a bigger complex known as Dicket Mead villa. The other building that formed Dicket Mead villa were never fully excavated as shortly after the remains were discovered, plans for a new motorway were released that ran through the site.

A protective cover was built over the baths but the remainder of the site was bulldozed. The remains of the baths now sit 9 metres below junction 6 of the M1. Only about half of the original baths is on display. Visible parts on display include the hypocaust, the tepidarium (warm room), caldarium (hot room) and the frigidarium (cold room) floor and cold bath, constructed from opus signinum.

Today the baths are open to the public every day during Herts school holidays from 14:00 to 17:00 or (dusk if earlier), and outside school holiday periods at weekends and bank holidays 14:00 to 17:00 (or dusk if earlier). Check the website for details.
